JAM - Hip Hop and Jazz is about to start

The worlds of hip hop and modern jazz come together in an event created specifically for Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture. Shows with renowned artists, DJ sets with live illustration, workshops and debates are some of the proposals at JAM – Hip Hop & Jazz, which takes place between the 25th and 27th of July, at Praça Marquês de Pombal. The curatorship is in charge of the journalist and music critic Rui Miguel Abreu. Free entrance.

Pianist, keyboardist and jazz composer Azar Azar will be on stage with Maze, rapper and band member of Dealema, for a concert on the night of the first day of the event. Still on July 25th, there will also be a rap workshop with Maze and a DJ set by Rui Miguel Abreu.

Hip hop and jazz come together for a new performance the following night, this time with DJ and producer Rafael Correia (aka Gijoe) and the trio of young pianist LANA GASPARØTTI, who will present a recently released solo work, after a long tour playing with Pedro Mafama. The opening and closing of this second day of JAM – Hip Hop & Jazz will also be in charge of Gijoe, with a sampling workshop and DJ set.

For the last show of the event, new jazz band Mazarin, whose debut album Pendular – produced by Gijoe – was released at the end of March, performs alongside veteran rapper TNT, in a day that begins with a jazz masterclass by Rui Miguel Abreu and closes with a DJ set by M3dusa.

JAM – Hip Hop & Jazz also features the participation of three influential names in the Aveiro hip hop universe. They are DJ Goty, the collective Outsiderz and the rapper Navega.

Over the three days, the DJ sets will be accompanied by moments of live illustration, starring Carlos Quitério. The event will also have debates that will explore the points of contact between jazz and hip hop and, on July 27th, the Antena 3 program “Notas Azuis”, by Rui Miguel, will be recorded live at Praça Marquês de Pombal.
