Festival dos Canais is back in July

Festival dos Canais returns next July to Aveiro. The 2023 edition takes place from the 12th to the 16th of July, with music, theatre, dance, a new circus, activities for children and other artistic fields, with free admission, filling the city with art and culture.
Among the highlights, the music chapter promises to be outstanding again. At the stage of Cais da Fonte Nova there will be a concert with three of the most acclaimed Portuguese male voices: Camané, Ricardo Ribeiro and António Zambujo. On that same stage, D.A.M.A will also be present, this time with Buba Espinho at their side. Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, the saxophonist Henk Van Twillert and the formation Vento do Norte in a performance inspired by the painter Pietr Mondriaan will also have a concert there. In the late afternoon concerts, next to Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva, there will be Wolf Manhattan, Da Chick, S. Pedro and The Lemon Lovers.
Among the many proposals in other artistic fields, there will be presence of Cie. Bivouac and its show “Lemniscate”, a performance around a complex and appealing artistic installation. Also the mysterious creatures of the show “Sylphes”, by Aerial Strada Company, promise to be noticed with a great show over the water. “Black Victorians”, by director Jeanefer Jean-Charles, brings a reflection on historical issues, while the Collectif Maison Courbe proposes a fusion between dance, circus and architecture, in “Obake”, a project created within the scope of a partnership between Aveiro, Malmo (Sweden) and Rouen (France), with the support of EFFEA – European Festivals Fund for Emerging Artists. For those who want to dive into the depths of the ocean, we recommend The Visitors, a show by V.O.S.A Theatre that will travel through the city's arteries to reveal an unknown world. In a combination of fire and percussion, the company Deabru Beltzak will roam the streets in an impactful performance, with its “Symfeuny”. The Fanfarra dos Canals, created in partnership with the Oficina de Música de Aveiro, will be another example of musical wandering through the streets, this time in a musical drift that brings together professional and amateur musicians, in a project involving the community.
Festival dos Canals will again feature two of its iconic venues: Sala de eSTAR (Living Room), with domestic furniture suited to its name, and Funky Beach, a beach in the middle of the city, with all the sand you are entitled to. Both will be ideal meeting points, with a bar, concerts and DJs.
Children and families will once again be treated to various proposals, with a venue named Seres da Terra, a welcoming venue full of inventive activities.
As in the last edition, Festival dos Canais will be the meeting point between artists, structures and organizers of national festivals with their counterparts in the Basque Country. Sessions will be organized for the presentation of mutual proposals, with the aim of generating future partnerships. This is the outcome of a protocol established between the Municipality of Aveiro and the Government of the Basque Country.
A novelty will be the organization of a pop-up for Chefs On Fire, a gastronomic event that invites renowned chefs to cook over a slow fire, celebrating the origins of cuisine. João Cura (Almeja), César Vitorino (Foco), Cristiano Barata (O Mercantel), Luís Gaspar (Sala de Corte), Pedro Braga (Mito) and Rafa Louzada (Gruta) are the chefs who will present, between 15 and 16th of July, for lunch and dinner, the best cuisine in the Region of Aveiro and Center of Portugal. The initiative includes concerts by You Can’t Win Charlie Brown, Ditch Days, Best Youth, Cassete Pirata, Tiago Nacarato and Budda Power Blues.
The Festival dos Canals is organized by the City Council of Aveiro/Teatro Aveirense.
