New work by Victor Hugo Pontes premieres at Teatro Aveirense

Victor Hugo Pontes' new work, which takes the 50th anniversary of 25 April to reflect on the current threats to freedom, has its premiere in Aveiro, as part of the Portuguese Capital of Culture. Há Qualquer Coisa Prestes a Acontecer will be performed on 6 December at 9.30pm at the Aveirense Theatre.

This creation comes in a year when many are looking back at the five decades of a free country, while at the same time looking forward, trying to glimpse the path to be travelled in order to preserve that greater freedom. It was precisely in this ‘place’ between the past and the future that Victor Hugo Pontes created Há Qualquer Coisa Prestes a Acontecer, with the body as its centrepiece.

To realise this show, the choreographer auditioned more than 300 candidates, selecting more than 70 and ultimately choosing 15 to join a cast of 19 performers. These dancers form a collective physical mass, made up of naked bodies and plastic images, which conveys to the audience what moves us, what frightens us, what threatens us, what transforms us, what conditions us, what liberates us. All without resorting to slogans or warning cries and without immediate allusions to a political, ideological or environmental state of affairs. The most rational sense of the human, the most forged, the most virtuous and, for this very reason, the freest, can be found in the undressed corps de ballet on stage.

A new work coproduced by Teatro Aveirense.
