The best of Brazilian theater with two premieres and the adaptation of a classic

The Brazilian theater event Todos São Palco is back in Aveiro. Teatro Aveirense will host three shows – two of which will be presented for the first time in Portugal –, in addition to a training session by the Brazilian company Teatro Oficina. The initiative, which will be held in the Municipality between the 18th and 26th of October, is part of the Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture program.

The sequence of shows begins on October 18th, at 9:30 pm, with the national premiere of the solo Hamlet 16x8, staged by Marco António Rodrigues and performed by Rogério Bandeira. The work is based on Hamlet and the Baker's Son: Imagined Memories, a book of memories and experiences by Augusto Boal, one of the most influential Brazilian creators who was exiled in Portugal during the military dictatorship.

On October 24th, at 9:30 pm, another national premiere arrives on the scene: the show Paranoia, in which actor Marcelo Drummond interprets the poems from the book of the same name by Roberto Piva. It is the best-known work of this poet from São Paulo, in which the author reveals himself as a wanderer traveling through the center of the metropolis, a mythical and libidinous city with a dynamic and underground homoerotic world.

Finally, on October 26th, at 9:30 pm, the public will be able to watch Waiting for Godot, an adaptation by Teatro Oficina, by José Celso Martinez Corrêa – also known as Zé Celso –, another one of the greatest figures in Brazilian theater and who was also exiled in Portugal after the 25th of April. The playwright, who died last year at the age of 86, transformed Samuel Beckett's classic into an urgent and very current work, incorporating themes and characters that interact with life in Brazil today.

Also as part of the Todos São Palco exhibition, Teatro Oficina will hold a workshop, in which the company's artists will share the theatrical, musical and visual creation methods used by the group. The training will be modeled on O Bailado do Deus Morto, an experimental piece by Flávio de Carvalho, staged in the form of a ritual spectacle, directed by Marcelo Drummond. At the end of the internship, an informal presentation of the results of the work will be made. The initiative is aimed at people over 14 years old with experience in amateur, school or professional theater and takes place between the 21st and 24th of October, from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm, at Teatro Aveirense. Registration can be made by email at agenio@cm-aveiro.pt.
