Theatre play ‘1984 by George Orwell’ premieres in Aveiro by Artistas Unidos

Big Brother will be at Teatro Aveirense with George Orwell's 1984. On 9 November, at 9.30pm, the Artistas Unidos company will premiere in Aveiro, as part of the Portuguese Capital of Culture programme, the adaptation of this historical novel for the theatre by Britons Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan.
First staged in the UK in 2013, George Orwell's 1984 revisits the story of a dystopian world where everyone is watched and watches each other, where the truth is brutally crushed and everyone must obey the all-seeing, all-knowing Party leader, Big Brother. It is in this reality that Winston Smith, the main character in Orwell's novel, dares to dream of a free world.
The play by Icke and Macmillan - both playwrights and directors who have won several awards, including the UK Theatre Award for Best Direction for George Orwell's 1984 - centres on a group of people in the year 2050 reading Winston Smith's secret diary. During the reading, these citizens keep their mobile phones in a box to avoid being hacked and discuss, in private, whether Smith was a real person and whether the events he described really happened. A multimedia version - with video - that tests both the public's tolerance of violence and their knowledge of the original text.
The staging of George Orwell's 1984 by Artistas Unidos is directed by Pedro Carraca and features Ana Castro, Carolina Salles, Gonçalo Carvalho, Inês Pereira, Paulo Pinto, Pedro Caeiro, Raquel Montenegro, Tiago Matias and Victor Gonçalves in the cast.
The play will have a session for school audiences on 8 November, also at the Aveirense Theatre.
