A play about the Barcelos rooster written by Pulitzer and Tony Prize winner

Cantar de Galo, a theatre play written by the North-American Robert Schenkkan, winner of the Pulitzer and Tony prizes, arrives this Friday, October 11, to Aveiro. The performance is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Teatro Aveirense and is part of the Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture program.

Jorge Andrade, artistic director of the Mala Voadora company – and for whom the play was written – plays the main character: the Rooster of Barcelos. This popular Portuguese souvenir comes to life and tells us his story, according to which he saved a pilgrim from the gallows who was wrongly accused of a crime. Still, he is not satisfied, he demands explanations and the one who appears to enlighten him is António de Oliveira Salazar. This is how the rooster learns that, after all, he is part of the manipulative nationalist fiction invented by the dictator who kept Portugal in fascist rule for 40 years. The rooster recovers his vocation as a vigilante and will want revenge on Salazar.

Cantar de Galo premiered in 2022, following an artistic residency by Robert Schenkkan at mala voadora. Tickets for the play can be purchased at the Teatro Aveirense box office or at Ticketline.
