Aveiro theatre unveils second quarter programme

Teatro Aveirense's second four-month programme invites the public to enjoy proposals in the areas of music, theatre, performance, dance and stand-up comedy, as well as shows created by the community, artists from Aveiro, co-productions and content for families. It's also the time of year when more proposals are presented out of doors, renewing the challenge for greater enjoyment of the public space. In this respect, the Festival dos Canais is undoubtedly the highlight.

Music with national and international proposals
Between May and August, the Aveirense Theatre will host a range of musical events, starting with the celebration of Johann Strauss's 200th birthday by the Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra from Vienna (Austria) on 5 May, followed by a concert by Brazilian Zé Ibarra for the premiere of his solo album on 9 May. Later that month, another edition of the biennial Reencontros de Música Contemporânea will take place, from 15 to 25 May, revealing new works by current composers and revisiting works by creators from the past. June will see concerts by Bia Maria, on the 12th, and The Black Mamba, on the 14th, and August will see a repeat of the New Thursdays on the Street programme, this year with a concert by Expresso Transatlântico in Praça da República, on the 7th. This is followed by a presentation of the Aveiro project Lés e Lés, by Vitor Hugo and Carlos Lázaro, scheduled for the same venue the following day. Both projects are part of the Sala Aberta programme - programming in a public space, where the landscape, geography and dialogue with the architecture and listed heritage surrounding the Teatro Aveirense building are used as a starting point for an invitation to create and enjoy culture.

Theatre in various registers, from classical to contemporary
As for the theatre, there's Hamlet by the São João National Theatre, directed by Nuno Cardoso, on 30 and 31 May, of which Teatro Aveirense / Câmara Municipal is co-producer. June sees the presentation of a challenging performance/reading session by the Visões Úteis company, created by Jorge Palinhos, in a mixture of theatre and graphic design. The title is Como Desenhar Uma Filha Nua (How to Draw a Naked Daughter) and it's scheduled for 26 June. The following day, director Tiago Guedes offers his vision of À Primeira Vista, based on a multi-award-winning text by Suzie Miller, in a monologue conducted by Margarida Vila-Nova. For 26 and 27 July there will be a performance of Swing, a fun show about a couple challenging their limits, with Diogo Morgado, Diana Nicolau, Manuel Marques and Susana Blazer.
Bruno Aleixo and Carlos Coutinho Vilhena offer two stand-up moments
The stand-up comedy will feature two moments that promise to attract the public's attention. The first takes place on 4 May with Aleixo Amigo - A live show very much your friend, in which the universe of the character Bruno Aleixo is presented on stage, followed by Snob, by comedian Carlos Coutinho Vilhena, who on 21 June tackles the issue of lying.

An especially busy calendar in the dance area
The dance area will be especially dynamic in this four-month period, with a calendar that begins on 16 May with OU, by André Braga and Cláudia Figueiredo, from CRL - Central Elétrica, in a new creation with southern Mozambique and its colonial past as a backdrop, followed by ATA, by Maria Fonseca, on 5 June, which tackles the complex issue of death in today's society. On 19 June, Margarida Constantino's Sagração de Quem Era will be presented under the heading Palcos Instáveis Segunda Casa, and on 4 July Paulo Ribeiro will present Maurice Accompagné, the first part of a trilogy dedicated to music, beginning with Luís de Freitas Branco and Maurice Ravel. The eighth edition of Estúdios Victor Córdon's Território programme, dedicated to young male and female dancers, will be presented on 25 July, with a programme that includes choreography by Marco Goecke and Nadav Zelner.

Commissioned projects with the Aveiro community will be shown in May and June
The second four months will also see the arrival on stage of two projects created with the Aveiro community throughout the year. May sees the premiere of O Navio dos Sonhos e a Ilha dos Amores (The Ship of Dreams and the Island of Loves), with text and artistic direction by João Garcia Miguel, as part of the OLAS project - Objetos e Laboratórios Artísticos e Sociais (Artistic and Social Objects and Laboratories), which in its second edition takes a theatrical journey through the essence of humanity through charismatic figures from Aveiro. The meeting is scheduled for 10 May. On 29 June there will be the third edition of Cantar-o-Lar, a project created in partnership with Orquestra Sem Fronteiras (Orchestra Without Borders) and performed with users of four Aveiro retirement homes. These two projects are part of the legacy of Aveiro 2024 - Portuguese Capital of Culture and will become an integral part of the Aveiro Theatre's educational and community service projects.

Emotions become colours in a show for families and schoolchildren
Families can look forward to Panda Express, by Lewis Gillon & Joana Mário, for viewers aged 6 and up, made up of multiple scenes inspired by the colour spectrum of human emotions. Performances on 4, 5 and 6 May, with the sessions on the last two dates dedicated exclusively to school audiences.

The 10th edition of the Festival dos Canais already has dates set
The Festival dos Canais, an Aveiro City Council event organised by Teatro Aveirense, is celebrating its 10th edition this year with a programme that promises to stay in everyone's memory and various initiatives designed to mark these years in the city's cultural calendar. The dates to remember are 16 to 20 July. The programme will be revealed soon.
