A Journey Through the Sounds of Aveiro
Published at — 11 November 2024
The sounds of Aveiro come to life in a musical project created specifically for Aveiro 2024 - Portuguese Capital of Culture, which brings together creators from six nationalities. From Chronos to Kairos will be released in physical format and online and features the artists @c (Portugal), Coldcut ft. Svetti (UK/USA), Felicia Atkinson (France), Joana de Sá (Portugal), Kate Carr (UK), KMRU (Kenya), Nory Kimijima (Japan) and Piurso (Portugal). The presentation will take place on 14 November at 9.30pm at the Aveirense Theatre, with a talk and performances by @c+Visiophone and Kate Carr. Admission is free.
From Chronos to Kairos started with a workshop by Jez riley French, a renowned British sound artist, who was in Aveiro in April to record the sounds of this territory with the participants in the initiative.
Eight musical projects from various latitudes were invited to create a track from this raw material. The result is as multifaceted as it is coherent, revealing Aveiro's sound heritage from different perspectives on a journey through various musical registers.
To realise this project, Aveiro City Council and the Aveirense Theatre, as part of Aveiro 2024 - Portuguese Capital of Culture, invited the VIC NIC publishing house, which was curated by Hugo Branco and Raquel Castro.
The project can be heard from 14 November at www.teatroaveirense.pt/pt/digital/.
Kate Carr's visit to Aveiro will also give the audience the opportunity to take part in a workshop on 15 November, from 16:00 to 20:00. Rubbish Music: Composition and Sound Performance with Discarded Objects offers the chance to explore the themes of sustainability and creativity in a collective experience, creating music from waste. Participation in the initiative is subject to registration by emailing lfernandes@cm-aveiro.pt.
From Chronos to Kairos follows on from New Chronologies of Sound, a project launched in 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, and created from sounds recorded by a group of artists in various parts of the world, in an edition that featured names such as Matthew Herbert, AGF, BJ Nilsen and Lawrence English.
