Art and technology to address the body as an artistic theme

From the 2nd to the 5th of October, the most iconic locations of the city of Aveiro and some unusual ones will gain new perspectives with PRISMA / Art Light Tech festival, which combines art and technology in dialogue with the city's heritage. The beginning of the festival will take place inside several historic buildings and, on the 4th and 5th, it will be open outdoors, with light installations in gardens, squares and streets of Aveiro. The Prisma Festival takes place within the scope of Aveiro Tech Week, a free access initiative organized by Aveiro City Hall, between September 30th and October 6th, and included in the programming of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture (Aveiro 2024).

“One-on-One” is the main theme of the 2024 edition of PRISMA / Art Light Tech, which brings together a set of works that have the body as its theme or central figure, bringing the audience's interaction to the scene on several occasions. A fusion between organic and digital with 19 installations (all national premieres) by artists from 11 nationalities.

Among the highlights is the installation “Mise en Abyme”, a large-scale work created specifically for PRISMA and Aveiro 2024 by Vicki Bennett. It is a video projection measuring 30 meters by 4.50 meters, which occupies the temporary exhibition room of the Museum of Aveiro/Santa Joana by an artist recognized for her collage technique.

In the Church of Carmelitas there will be “Nemo Observatorium”, a great impact installation where visitors are invited to sit in the eye of the hurricane and find a moment of contemplation. An installation by renowned Belgian artist Lawrence Malstaf. At the Art Nouveau Museum you can find works by two renowned artists, the German Diemut and the Italian Michele Spanghero. The first features “The Payer,” an anthropomorphic piece featuring both the divine and the computer, which aims to draw a line between humans and artificial intelligence. Michele Spanghero brings “Ad lib.”, a work that alludes to our lung capacity and where the musical aspect is very present.

Another highlight is the work of Sölen Kiratli, Hannen Wolfe and Alex Bundy, North American artists whose work, “Cacophonic Choir”, addresses the theme of victims of sexual violence in today's world, with technological platforms playing a relevant role. To see at the Aveiro City Museum.

Not to be missed is the double presence of Collectif Scale. The renowned French collective brings “Hulahoop” and “Flux”, to see in the Antiga Capitania building and Praça Marquês de Pombal, respectively, two visually strong installations that have surprised visitors to some of the most prestigious festivals in the world.

This edition also marks the debut of a new location on the PRISMA itinerary: Rossio. In its external area, “Aftereal” will be presented, a work by Japanese artist Yasuhiro Chida, who returns to the festival with a large installation made up of several kilometers of wires and ultraviolet lights that will certainly become one of the festival’s icons. In the Parking Lot, the public will be able to interact with “Stratum”, an installation by French artists Chevalvert activated through the movement of participants.

Also noteworthy is “Pulsar”, a videomapping designed specifically for the facade of the old Fábrica Jerónimo Pereira de Campos, the outcome of a collaboration between the Italian studio mammasONica, the artist from Aveiro Francisca Cardoso Lima and the Slovakian artist Sedemminut.

Another of the highlights of PRISMA 2024 is “Imagine”, a work created with the community, with the contribution of 300 children from Aveiro for a videomapping to be projected on the facade of the Old Captaincy building. The artistic direction of the project is by the Italian Onda Studio.

Children are once again invited to participate in PRISMA through the “Libelinhas Workshop”, an activity in which they can build a shiny object that will help to brighten up this edition of the festival even more.
